Olav Mol

Olav Mol

Olav Mol is one of the most recognisable figures – and especially voices – in Dutch motorsport. Since 1991, he has been active as a Formula 1 commentator. For many years, he was considered the fixed voice of F1 on Dutch television and is currently heard on Ziggo Sport and Grand Prix Radio.

Olav Mol as a Formula 1 Commentator

Mol began his broadcasting career at Circuit Zandvoort and, in 1985, served as circuit announcer for the then-last Dutch Grand Prix. His official debut as an F1 commentator came in 1991 at NOS, covering the Monaco Grand Prix. In 1992, he moved to RTL when the network acquired the broadcasting rights. Alongside Allard Kalff – and later Jack Plooij – he formed a familiar commentary duo for many years.
After stints at SBS and a return to RTL, Mol joined Sport1, which was rebranded as Ziggo Sport in 2016. Until Viaplay entered the market in 2022, Mol was the lead commentator for all live Formula 1 broadcasts in the Netherlands.

Current Roles: Ziggo Sport and Grand Prix Radio

Although Ziggo Sport has not held live rights since 2022, Mol continues to work for the channel, providing commentary for highlights and analysis segments of F1 sessions. He is also a commentator for Grand Prix Radio, delivering live race coverage on the radio. Thanks to a 2024 collaboration between Viaplay and Grand Prix Radio, Mol has once again been able to deliver live race commentary – now via radio broadcasts.

Awards and Other Projects

A career highlight came when Mol won the award for Best Sports Commentator for his coverage of the legendary 2016 Spanish Grand Prix, where Max Verstappen claimed his first F1 victory. Beyond his commentary work, Mol has authored multiple Formula 1 books and lends his voice to the Flitsmeister app, warning Dutch drivers about speed checks.

Personal Life: Family and Loss

Olav Mol was born in 1962 in Bloemendaal and currently lives in Spain. He was married to Marjon, who passed away from cancer in 2010. In 2016, he married his current wife, Alina. Mol has two children and is the grandfather of three grandchildren. While his exact net worth is unknown, his long career as a commentator and author has likely made him financially independent.
