Hamilton to stay at Ferrari until 2028? Major contract twist emerges before Monza

The seven-time world champion’s agreement with the Scuderia has officially been described only as a multi-year deal. However, GPBlog understands that Hamilton is committed through 2027 but could extend his stay for one further campaign, potentially keeping him in red until he is 43.

Ferrari has not confirmed a 2028 race seat for Hamilton but a final decision could be in the Briton’s hands, should his motivation to stay and Ferrari’s performance remain strong.

It comes ahead of Ferrari's home race at the Italian GP and after Max Verstappen has committed his future to Red Bull with a new extension through 2030, while Lando Norris has also signed on with McLaren until at least 2030.

Those agreements have removed two of Formula 1’s biggest names from the market and intensified attention on the remaining long-term plans of Ferrari’s current line-up. Charles Leclerc has already agreed a new multi-year Ferrari deal understood to extend beyond 2028, while Hamilton’s position has remained less clearly defined in public.

Should the reported option be activated by both parties, Ferrari would retain one of the sport’s most successful drivers through a crucial phase of its project under the 2026 rules.

Hamilton arrived from Mercedes with the ambition of adding an eighth world championship to his record and becoming the latest champion to win for Formula 1’s most famous team.

His opening Ferrari campaign brought challenges, but the partnership has continued to carry enormous weight both on track and commercially. The prospect of a stay until 2028 would underline that Hamilton’s move to Maranello was not designed as a brief final chapter.

For Ferrari, continuity could be especially valuable as the team develops its car and operations for the new technical cycle, with boss Fred Vasseur hailing the Brit's experience as crucial to Ferrari's development.

Hamilton’s knowledge of previous regulation changes, combined with Leclerc’s long-term commitment, would give the Scuderia a stable driver pairing for the seasons ahead.

As Ferrari prepares for its most emotionally charged weekend of the year, Hamilton’s future is now another major storyline to watch. A decision on 2028 may not be imminent, but the door appears open.
