At the time when our car wasn't competitive, that was his ¨Verstappen's great passion. Now both work. I'm sure he'll compete and he'll be prepared to fight for the overall victory.
- Helmut MarkoSpeaking with Sport.de, Marko revealed Verstappen had been allowed to part take in the legendary endurance race in a jubilant "Yes!"
"I think it's great that a Formula 1 driver, who has a lot of obligations in addition to the races - simulator, marketing and PR appointments - then takes the time for something like this with huge enthusiasm," Marko added.
The Austrian then couldn't resist taking a dig at the regulations that establish that all drivers, without exception, are required to obtain a special Nordschleife permit (DMSB grade A license) to race professionally at the iconic track.
"And then this German procedure, that a four-time world champion has to prove that he can drive around the Ring in a 240 hp Porsche, is unique," Marko said.
"But he took it all upon himself, although he has certainly already done 1000 laps in the simulator around the Nürburgring. So he didn't come unprepared."
Marko then lauded the endurance race as something that every driver dreams of, even more so when things are not going as desired sportingly.
"At the time when our car wasn't competitive, that was his great passion. Now both work. I'm sure he'll compete and he'll be prepared to fight for the overall victory."
The Red Bull chief advisor then denied the 24 hours of Le Mans would be in the cards for the driver. The risks, the Austrian believes are much greater there.
"Le Mans is not in the program. Le Mans is a different story," Marko says. "The differences in speed and the different categories are even greater. For the time being: Long distance only Nürburgring!"
Verstappen's recent experience at the 'Green Hell'
Recently Verstappen made an appearance at the Nordschleife to obtain his grade A permit to be able to participate in the 24-hour-long race.
Thus Verstappen is now ready to take on his until now unreachable dream of participating in endurance racing.
