Lawson tipped for major racing cameo amid forced Formula 1’s April break

Australia’s premier touring car series is set for its third round of the season at Taupō International Motorsport Park from 10–12 April — a date that would ordinarily have clashed with the Bahrain Grand Prix.

However, ongoing turmoil in the Middle East has left Formula 1 without any racing in April, opening the door for drivers to explore opportunities in other categories — much like Max Verstappen has already done.

According to MotorRacing360 journalist James Phelps, speaking on Fox Sports, Supercars organisers are seriously exploring the possibility of handing Liam Lawson a wildcard entry for one of the New Zealand rounds.

Discussions are said to be at an advanced stage, but a key obstacle remains: finding him a car. With no spare seats currently available, organisers have reportedly reached out to teams to gauge whether any driver would be willing to step aside for the weekend.

While the move would represent a major boost in global exposure for the series, it appears unlikely that any team will sacrifice a race seat. With the current finals format keeping championship hopes alive across the grid, every driver is still firmly focused on their own campaign.

He stressed that the priority is to ensure the car delivers a consistent, confidence-inspiring feel for any driver, while also proving its reliability across different conditions.

With that in mind, he is still targeting further running in both wet conditions and at night, aiming to tick off those final checks ahead of the 24-hour race.
