Circuit Zandvoort is going to try out a new solution that lies between asphalt and gravel. By applying fake gravel, the circuit hopes to reduce the risk of red flags without having to apply a run-off lane.

Zandvoort tests 'fake gravel trap

Following several red flags during the 2021 race weekend, Zandvoort opted to try out a unique solution. To this end, fake gravel has been applied to the outer edge of the gravel pit in Turn 12. It looks like gravel, but is made of a resin-like material, Motorsport.com reports.
When drivers come into contact with the material they will experience reduced grip, which should discourage them from abusing it. Jan Lammers explains that it is intended to prevent debris on the track and calls it a 'nice development for other circuits'.
