Wolff: 'Formula E with G3 cars ever closer to Formula 1 in performance'

Mercedes F1 team boss Toto Wolff sounds excited about the next generation of Formula E cars. According to the Austrian, the performance of the FE cars is getting closer to that of F1.

Starting with the 2022/2023 season, Formula E is going to race with a next generation car. Not only are the G3 cars going to look very different, but the electronically powered race cars are going to be a lot faster. The performance is expected to go up so much that small comparisons between FE and F1 can already be made.

Dutchman Nyck de Vries won the championship last year in a Mercedes. Mercedes therefore had a great year in 2021 both electrically in the FE and hybridly in F1. Wolff sounds enthusiastic about the electric class to the Chinese news agency Xinhua: "The Gen3 cars will reach speeds above three hundred kilometers per hour on street circuits. Therefore, they will be a lot closer to F1 in terms of performance."

Wolff sees that although most car brands are moving more and more toward electronic engines, Formula 1 still retains its value with hybrid engines: "F1 is going from peak to peak. We have over a billion viewers worldwide. It's an exciting platform that is hybrid and will use 100 percent renewable fuel starting in 2026."
