Wolff: Contract decision isn't just about 2020 season but about 'looking ahead'

On the 20th July 2018, Mercedes fired early and announced the contract extension of both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas. However, it seems as if Toto Wolff is keeping his powder dry during the 2019 Formula 1 season as the team look to plan ahead.

Esteban Ocon is sitting in the Mercedes garage, desperate for a drive during the 2020 season. However, Bottas is pushing Hamilton for the title having upped his game during the winter. Wolff admitted the team are taking their time this year as they look to plan for the future.

"I think it is difficult to announce drivers so early anyway. If you really want to do well, then you take the time for it. It is not just a matter of next year for us, but also looking to the future. That is why the focus is now on an announcement in August," Wolff said.
