Why the Hungarian Grand Prix could make or break Russell's title challenge before the summer break

The Mercedes driver trails team-mate Kimi Antonelli by almost 50 points, a deficit that history suggests is exceptionally difficult to overturn, particularly within the same team. The British driver previously closed the gap from 68 points after the Monaco Grand Prix to 25 after the British Grand Prix, after his own bad luck appeared to be balanced out with some misfortune for Antonelli in Barcelona and Silverstone.

However, just as things started to look better for Russell, his DNF at the Belgium Grand Prix, coinciding with Antonelli's victory, means he is now two full race victories behind the Italian in the drivers' championship.

A victory in Hungary would not suddenly make Russell the favourite, but another weekend in which the gap grows beyond 50 points would leave him heading into the summer shutdown needing not only a flawless second half of the season, but also a significant swing in fortune against his rookie team-mate. Russell has been vocal about his power issues across recent races, furiously ranting over the radio after struggling for speed down the Kemmel Straight, before his race-ending collision with Lewis Hamilton at Les Combes.

Mercedes identified a software issue which impacted all of the cars using the German manufacturer's engine on the opening lap of the race at Spa-Francorchamps.

Antonelli delivered a commanding performance at Spa, after he lost out on victory at Silverstone due to a broken tyre shield. At both races, Russell complained about a lack of power down the straights and the half second gap between the two in qualifying for the Belgian GP was notable.

Compared to the energy-starving tracks of Silverstone and Spa, Toto Wolff has escribed the Hungaroring as "energy rich". Russell therefore should not suffer the same issues he endured in the last two races, and give him a strong chance of taking victory.

Russell has won at Hungary before in 2022 and delivered a strong performance last season to finish third behind the two dominant McLarens. Antonelli was not comfortable at Budapest last season, qualifying 15th and only finishing 10th.

No driver has come from 50 points behind to win the drivers' championship and that fact is made even harder when the driver at the top of the leader board is his teammate.

The largest gap a driver has come from behind his teammate to win the championship is 34 points, a gap which Lando Norris found himself behind Oscar Piastri after his DNF at the Dutch Grand Prix, going on to beat his teammate by 13 points.

At Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton found himself 29 points behind Nico Rosberg after retiring from the Belgian Grand Prix, but went on to win the title by 77 points - a gap exaggerated by the double points rule at the season finale.

Russell can take some confidence that he closed down a 68 point gap earlier this season by 43 points, before his retirement in Spa. However, with not as many races left on the board, Antonelli's incredible form this season, and uncertainty whether Formula 1 will even go racing in Qatar or Abu Dhabi, Russell needs to start beating the Italian regularly, or hope more misfortune strikes his teammate, if he is to win the championship.

Despite the 50 point gap, Mercedes are refusing to prioritise Antonelli over Russell just yet in the championship battle. However, Mercedes might be forced into a decision, if Hamilton closes the gap to Antonelli, and Russell is unable to do so.

Ferrari, while lacking the pace of Mercedes, are clearly a strong threat after wins for Hamilton in Barcelona and Charles Leclerc in Silverstone - the latter of which also showing strong pace at Spa.

Hamilton is the master of Hungary with eight wins to his name, and a result where he wins the race, but Antonelli outscores Russell, would be hugely detrimental to the British Mercedes driver.

If Hamilton does close the gap and become an even bigger threat to Antonelli, Mercedes might have to think about team orders if they believe that the Italian is the only driver who can win the championship.
