Max Verstappen claimed the 72nd victory of his Formula 1 career in Malaysia, converting the pole position he secured in qualifying on Saturday into Red Bull Powertrains’ first win. Speaking after the race, the Dutchman expressed his satisfaction with how the entire weekend had unfolded.
The Dutchman’s path to victory was far from straightforward, however, as he was overtaken by both Mercedes drivers in the early stages of the race. Verstappen was able to recover and work his way back into the lead before taking control at the front. Even the late Safety Car failed to deny him, with the four-time world champion holding onto first place at the restart.
Verstappen ultimately brought the car home to complete a pole-to-victory weekend in Malaysia and secure his first win of the campaign.
Victory at Sepang also moves Verstappen level with Lando Norris on 188 points and just three behind Charles Leclerc, putting him firmly in contention for fourth place in the championship. Lewis Hamilton, who finished third today, is also not too far ahead.

Verstappen described the victory as particularly rewarding after the difficult season Red Bull have endured and the progress the team have made over recent months. The Dutchman was especially proud of the work carried out by everyone involved and delighted to finally return to the top step of the podium in Malaysia.
The race weekend was not without complications, with Verstappen also referring to the unusual problem encountered during the formation lap. Like several other drivers, he initially struggled to accelerate as he waited for the power to become available, adding further uncertainty to an already hectic start to the Grand Prix.
Once the race got under way, Verstappen felt Red Bull made the correct decision to switch to the intermediate tyres. From there, he gradually worked his way back through the field until he was able to run his own race at the front. The late Safety Car provided one final challenge, but Verstappen felt he had everything under control through to the chequered flag.
"It's a really nice one after the year we've had and the progression we have made. I'm incredibly proud of everyone. Just super nice to win here."
"It was very hectic with a lot of different things at the start - no power, because you have to wait for the power to kick in. We made the right call with the intermediates. After that, step by step we moved out way forward. From there, once we could do our own race then we had the Safety Car but we kept it all under control."
