During the 2018 FIA prize giving ceremony, Toto Wolff 'had to put his arm around his family,' George Russell to protect him from a rather tipsy Kimi Raikkonen.
It is very well-known that Raikkonen's love of racing was only match for his love of a good time. Images of him headed straight to a yatch at the Monte Carlo bay after having retired his McLaren to party are famous among the F1 community.
However, at the FIA gala, matters got out of hand, as the Finnish driver had a few too many drinks in his system, Wolff, the Mercedes CEO and team principal recounts speaking to ORF.
Alongside George Russell, who was unvoluntarily at the center of the dischord at the time, the Austrian asked the Briton if he could tell the story.
"That's up to you," replied Russell laughing, before clarifying, "It doesn't affect me."
Wolff then revealed that despite the nature of the story, it was nevertheless true. "It's a somewhat embarrassing story, but it's what happened."

Raikkonen insulted Russell, and Wolff was having none of it

The Austrian cited his upbringing as the reason behind the way he handled the whole afffair.
"I grew up in a tough environment where sometimes you had to defend yourself."
"We were in St. Petersburg for the awards ceremony, and a Formula 1 driver [Raikkonen] insulted George, even though he had won the F2.
"Then I had to throw a punch, and that was the end of it."
Wolff then clarified one the traits that define him as, not only Mercedes' leader, but also as tha patriarch of his family structure.
"I will give everything for my family or my team. I will always put my arm around their shoulders if necessary to protect them."
"Conversely, I myself need the support of my team just as much," concluded the Austrian.
