Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton, like many drivers, had to take multiple penalties for exceeding track limits at the Austrian Grand Prix. Mercedes engineer Andrew Shovlin sees the cause of exceeding the track limits. The Brit explains what is wrong with the seven-time world champion's car.
So what was the reason for crossing the track limits? "The fact that he had this balance problem, where the car was not turning strongly enough when he turned in, meant that he went too wide a number of times, crossed the line and ultimately that was the cause of the penalty," Shovlin explained in the Austrian GP debrief.

Hamilton on board radio

The 38-year-old British driver could often be heard on the board radio when it came to the track limits at the Red Bull Ring. Not only because of his own track violations, but also those of others.
Shovlin does not blame the hour of practice in Austria. "Everyone is in the same boat with the one-hour practice. So we can't really use that as an excuse. Part of it will probably have to do with the fact that our car is not that suitable for the track in Austria," the engineer explained.
