Carlos Sainz says Renault should be worried about the gains their rivals in Honda appear to be making with the recent upgrades to their power unit. Sainz believes that Honda's marked improvement from their time with McLaren to now with Toro Rosso is "scary".
Speaking to media ahead of the US Grand Prix, Sainz admitted that he was worried about potential gains Honda appear to have found with their new updates, admitting that it should serve as a wake-up call to Renault.
"At Suzuka, I left the Honda cars behind in the race but in qualifying they have taken a step forward. We could not develop in the same way and it's scary for Renault," he is quoted by Speed Week in Austin.
Sainz, who is moving to McLaren next season who is also powered by Renault, did seem certain that Renault would be capable of making gains themselves, targetting Ferrari and Mercedes next season with an all-new power unit of their own.
"We will have a whole new engine next year. Renault is capable of building an engine that is on the level of Ferrari and Mercedes."
