Sainz happy with decision: 'How can I not go there?'

Carlos Sainz made the switch from McLaren to Ferrari at the end of 2020. With the Spaniard, Ferrari got a driver who will have to ensure constant performance in the coming years. It was not a complicated choice for Sainz to go to Ferrari.

The Madrid native started in F1 at Toro Rosso in 2015, followed by periods at Renault and McLaren. In the latter team he performed excellently, which led McLaren to hope that he would stay. However, Sainz decided otherwise when Ferrari showed interest and informed his team that he wanted to leave for the Italian racing stable.

"We came back with Ferrari from a long way back. It was a bad year, but it is a team with a very high capacity to turn things around. I was surprised when people asked me, 'Why are you going to Ferrari when you are great at McLaren'. And I thought, 'How can I not go there?'," Sainz explained in an interview with Spanish outlet Marca.

Sainz excels in first year with Ferrari

Sainz had an excellent season with his new team, beating his teammate and star of the sport Charles Leclerc in the Drivers' Championship, thanks to his podium in Abu Dhabi. His form helped Ferrari excel in the second half of the season and secure third in the Constructors' Championship.
