Max Verstappen in principle plans to stay with Red Bull Racing. But like any smart team, the Austrians keep an eye on possible alternatives. At Red Bull, it’s no different. That’s why George Russell’s situation at Mercedes is being closely monitored. It was leaked some time ago that George Russell had an exploratory meeting with Horner. During that discussion, both parties talked about their positions in the driver market.
Russell would prefer to stay with Mercedes, Red Bull will continue with Max Verstappen. Verstappen also wants the latter, although there is a possible scenario in which the Dutchman would still consider leaving.
George Russell in Austria
However, GPblog learned last weekend in Austria that the talks between Russell’s camp and Red Bull remained purely exploratory.
Since then, Russell has had one scenario in mind: re-signing with Mercedes, which, for now, is also the most logical plan. The rumour—spread by a German columnist outside the
F1 paddock—that Russell and Red Bull have intensified their talks is nonsense.
Moreover, this wouldn’t align with what Red Bull wants, which is to keep Max Verstappen on board. It would also send a strange signal, making people wonder:
Is Verstappen really going to leave after all?
