George Russell has insisted he “hasn’t forgotten how to drive” after being beaten by teammate Kimi Antonelli at the Miami Grand Prix.
The Mercedes driver headed into the race weekend in Florida targeting his first win since the Australian Grand Prix, but instead endured another frustrating outing, leaving him with more questions than answers. Russell finished 43 seconds behind Antonelli, with the Italian extending his lead over the Briton in the drivers’ standings to 20 points.
Reflecting on what is becoming an underwhelming run of results, Russell praised Antonelli’s performances while stressing that his own ability remains intact. The British driver admitted he is going through a difficult spell but remains confident he can turn things around.
“He [Antonelli] is a fantastic driver and has been exceptionally quick since day one. He’s won all of the championships as a youngster. I’ve still got confidence in myself and have also been there. I’ve not forgotten how to drive. It’s just a little bit of a tricky run, but we are four races down, a long way to go, and I think we will reassess things over the next few weeks,” Russell said to Sky Sports.

At the Grand Prix in Miami, Russell could only muster a fourth-place finish – extending his run without a podium and also seeing him lose the tag as championship favourite after another win for Antonelli.

Why Canada could be pivotal for Russell

Earlier, former F1 driver Juan Pablo Montoya noted how the upcoming Canadian Grand Prix could prove to be integral for Russell in his battle against Antonelli. The Colombian noted how the 28-year-old must ensure he claims victory at a circuit he has previously won at.
Montoya, however, detailed how another defeat to the Italian could prove a psychological blow to Russell.
