Nico Hulkenberg started the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in great style and was running high in 5th. This was until he crashed into the wall which ended his race. The Renault boss will accept this mistake if it is only a one-off.
A similar incident occurred last year in Baku, as Hulkenberg hit the wall after another mistake.
Sainz finished in 5th on Sunday, perhaps showing what Hulkenberg could have done had he kept it on the tarmac.
Abiteboul summed the race up to f1.com saying it was: “50% good.”
“Carlos did a good race but Nico just made a mistake. He makes one a year and last year it was here as well!”
“If it’s his only mistake this year, he will be more than forgiven.”
The fight for fourth place in the constructors' championship heats up, as Renault moved within a point of McLaren. The Renault boss,
Cyril Abiteboul, was pleased with the gains made.
“It is very encouraging to look at how the grid has changed since last year.
“The gap to Red Bull, and from the Renault engine to the rest of the field is obvious evidence of all the progress we have made and continue to make every weekend."
