Red Bull wants to further explore usefulness of AI

Red Bull Racing would be open to the more intensive use of artificial intelligence (AI). So says the team's chief designer Craig Skinner. Skinner says AI is already being worked with, adding that more extensive capabilities are being looked at.

As a pioneer in (car) technology, Formula 1 would not be out of place to work more with increasingly important artificial intelligence. A team like Red Bull, with partner tech giant Oracle, has good opportunities to deepen the usability of AI in motorsport. AI will have its advantages, according to Skinner, but the designer does not seem to believe it can design cars better than humans.

Skinner says on the Talking Bull podcast, "It’s a field that is being investigated. And it has its uses I think. With AI you’ve got to teach it, you need to teach it what it’s looking for, so ultimately it comes back to again having the understanding in the first place of what you’re actually looking for."

Ultimately, the input has to come from the staff. Skinner cites examples like, what makes a car fast and what do you want to get out of aerodynamics? Skinner continues: "So yes, we do use it and we are investigating it. But ultimately, it all comes down to how much you understand the problem in the first place.”
