Ford is once again expanding its massive motorsport program. The American manufacturer has been active in Formula 1 with Red Bull since this season, will return to the top class of the WEC in 2027, and has now announced that starting in 2028 it will also return as a factory team in the World Rally Championship (WRC). The partnership with Red Bull in Formula 1 is perhaps the most eye-catching example. Ford is collaborating with
Red Bull Powertrains on power units for
Red Bull Racing and Racing Bulls.
Ford had previously announced its return to the top class of the World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2027. From 2028, an official factory program in the WRC will be added to that. For the rally project, Ford will continue to work with M-Sport, with which the manufacturer has maintained a close partnership for decades. Starting in 2028, Ford Racing will be directly involved in the program. A year later, a completely new Rally1 car is set to make its debut.
Ford is returning to the WRC after the FIA announced changes to the technical regulations. With these changes, the motorsport federation aims to significantly reduce costs. A race-ready car may cost a maximum of 345,000 euros.
“As we celebrate 125 years of Ford Racing, our fifty-year history in the WRC stands out as one of the things we are most proud of,” says Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Racing. “We can’t wait to compete in rallies again starting in 2028.”
Ben Sulayem sees momentum building
FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem calls it an important moment for the WRC. According to him, with a new promoter, multiple manufacturers taking part, and Ford’s return as a factory team, there is “real momentum” heading into the new era of rallying.
“Ford is one of the great names in motorsport, and its involvement in FIA world championships continues to grow,” says Ben Sulayem. For the FIA President, the return also carries personal significance. Ben Sulayem drove for Ford during his own rallying career. “It is therefore a special moment for me to welcome them back,” said the Emirati.
