Nyck de Vries may appear at the start in Bahrain

McLaren's situation is far from ideal in their preparation for the new season. Where it hoped to go into the test days with Daniel Ricciardo, the driver contracted coronavirus and is therefore in quarantine. It possibly offers opportunities for Nyck de Vries.

According to the rules, Ricciardo has to stay in quarantine until Thursday, after which he is allowed out in the evening. It would mean that the next day he would have to get straight into his car to start the first two free practice sessions, which may not be physically doable.

It raises the question of which driver could be Ricciardo's replacement. Auto, Motor und Sport Asked team boss Andreas Seidl who had a clear answer to that. According to him, Mclaren has an agreement with Mercedes and De Vries and Stoffel Vandoorne are eligible for the race in Bahrain.

It would be very special for De Vries, as the Dutchman was in the picture this season to get into Formula 1. Although the interest was there, no team decided to go with him. It ensures that De Vries can also be found in Formula E this season.
