'No team knows 100 percent of what makes a car fast'

Mercedes is in for its toughest season in years in 2022. Partly due to the new regulations, the German racing team has lost the lead to Ferrari and Red Bull Racing, leaving them behind for the time being. According to Gary Anderson, however, this is not just to do with Mercedes itself.
Since the beginning of the hybrid era, Mercedes had a big lead over the competition. With Lewis Hamilton, and once Nico Rosberg, Mercedes managed to win the world title for years. Additionally, last season, Toto Wolff's team competed until the end, but then fell just short of Max Verstappen and Red Bull.

Luck plays an important role in Formula 1

Although racing teams try to control everything as much as possible, according to Anderson that is almost impossible. Indeed, the Formula One expert sees that there are many parts of the motorsport class that are likewise about luck.
"I always say that no team knows 100 percent of what makes a car fast," he explains on The Race. "The best team at any given point in time simply knows more than the others or has been a bit lucky by not making any mistakes on the unknown parts that make up a car’s performance. A good example of that is Mercedes this year."
