Montoya blasts 'unnecessarily impatient' Norris as situation now 'is getting out of hand'

Juan Pablo Montoya didn’t hold back when commenting on the costly mistake made by Lando Norris in the closing stages of the Canadian Grand Prix — nor in assessing the McLaren driver’s recent form overall.
With such a dominant McLaren car and a Red Bull team now staying afloat largely thanks to Max Verstappen, many had expected this to be the year of Lando Norris — a golden opportunity to get his revenge on his rival and finally claim the first world title of his career.
While that’s still very much within reach, Norris may have underestimated the rapid rise of his teammate Oscar Piastri, with whom he made contact just last weekend in Canada.
The costly mistake made by the Briton naturally drew plenty of criticism, despite his immediate post-race apology to both his teammate and the team.

One of those who had something to say about the McLaren driver’s weekend was Juan Pablo Montoya, who shared the following comments in an interview with a betting website: "There were even two big mistakes. The first was during qualifying, because the whole Q3 situation is getting out of hand''.
''In recent weeks it seems that he has the situation better under control and that he is even a bit better than Oscar Piastri, but when he reaches Q3, he just doesn't get a good lap out of it. That's difficult to see, because he has more speed than Oscar. But Oscar is always the one who picks up the pieces in the end."
"Lando is just too emotional. I really like him, so I really feel for him in terms of his emotions. He puts himself in a more difficult situation every time. He is calm all weekend and executes everything well, but then we get to Q3 and something seems to switch in his head. He thinks: 'I can't mess this up now'. But yes, if you think about not messing something up, you often mess it up anyway."

Norris was 'unnecessarily impatient'

Finally, commenting on the incident with Piastri, Montoya added: ''If you're on a straight and there's grass next to it, you can still get away with it if you end up on the grass. But in this case there was a corner, so even if Oscar had given him a bit more space and Lando had ended up on the grass, he would still have come out on top. Even if he hadn't hit Oscar, it wouldn't have worked."
"He was just really unnecessarily impatient. He had already done all the hard work, had come back from a five-second deficit and had even closed the gap. He had a chance to pass Oscar, but he simply didn't take it. You have to force Oscar to make a mistake, rather than you making the mistake yourself."
