Martin Brundle believes Fernando Alonso will leave Formula 1 at the end of the 2018 season after interviewing him in Monaco.
The Sky Sports commentator insists his attitude and passion about Monaco isn’t in the best place as he goes on to pursue the triple crown.
“In Monaco, I had a long interview with Fernando prior to the race, and he really gave me the impression that he will not be on the grid next year,” said Brundle.
McLaren’s infamous issues over the past four years have troubled Alonso’s career. The two-time world champion has improved in 2018 having scored points in every race until Monaco.
He retired from Sunday’s Grand Prix on lap 52 because of a gearbox issue.
“His breakdown in the race on Sunday does really not help him change his mind,” continued Brundle.
“After the race, he criticised the circuit of Monaco and gave a compliment to the Indy 500. You never know with Alonso and who knows if he will disappear and if he comes back after a year.
“What I do think is the motivation and energy of Fernando will soon be lost in Formula 1.”
