Lammers doesn't understand punishment: 'Hamilton doesn't have any punishment now'

Lewis Hamilton received a five-second penalty for his duel with Alexander Albon and fell off the podium. However, Jan Lammers is not satisfied with the penalty the Briton received, as it caused little damage.

''In my opinion Hamilton shouldn't be punished at all,'' Lammers starts at the Formula 1 podcast of the NOS. ''It's a race incident what happens between those two drivers. Albon goes outside and then you know you depend on the other driver. Then this can just happen'', says Lammers.

However, the former Formula 1 driver is of the opinion that the penalty doesn't make any sense in the end. ''If you then decide that it is a punishment, then it has to be a good punishment. With five seconds he'll cross the finish line, while that actually ruins Albon's race'', says Lammers, who suggests a new penalty model.

''It would be better if drivers found guilty had to exchange their points with those to whom they have caused damage. That way you know that if you do something to somebody else, you have to give him the points. That's a self-regulating process and creates a lot more mutual respect'', concludes Lammers.

It's not the first time that Hamilton or any other driver has points left over from a race when he was found guilty of a crash. Albon also lost his podium in Brazil when Hamilton dived into a hole and came into contact with the Thai. Hamilton finished seventh, Albon finished outside the points.
