New points system in Formula 1? This former driver favours the idea!

Formula 1 are reportedly considering a new points system for next season, as right now there is a difference between the top five and the bottom five teams it seems. Jan Lammers, former Formula 1 driver, would be in favour of this, as it would make it a lot more attractive for both so-called groups of teams.

With the new points classification, the top seven would get the same number of points as we are used to, but from the eighth place onwards, it then becomes different. Namely, from P8 onwards, the countdown is one point at a time, so P8 is then good for five points, P9 for four points, P10 for three points, and so on. So this means that finishing P11 and P12 will also allow you to earn points. Lammers is in favour of this idea.

"I actually think it's fine," Lammers said in the NOS Formula 1 podcast. "Now I think it is a big difference in points between number seven and tenth place. While there is so much fighting for tenth place now, I think it all becomes a bit more attractive for teams as well," the 67-year-old said.

"The commitment, the cost and the effort to just be in that top ten is obviously huge. I think, if you do a little bit of sparring, that twelfth place could also yield one point. Then you still throw a fish out for the teams who can rarely get one there. I think actually, also because the top seven doesn't change, not that bad," Lammers concludes.
