Rinus van Kalmthout had to settle for twentieth in Saturday's IndyCar race. The Dutchman drove the Texas Motor Speedway in sixth position for a long time, but due to bad luck in the race, he had to settle for twentieth.
The weather conditions in Texas were not great, so the race committee had to cancel qualifying. This meant that the ranking was held for the starting positions and Van Kalmthout could start the race in eighth position. The Hoofddorper started the race excellently, passing several drivers and moving up to sixth place. Laps later he was in twelfth place.
The team decided to call him in for a pit stop on lap 153 of the 200, but that turned out to be exactly the wrong moment. Seven laps later he saw the yellow flag waving, after which almost all drivers decided to come in. The result was a lap deficit that he was unable to make up in the race.
It was a hard blow for Van Kalmthout, although he was able to accept it after the race. He states on the website of his team Ed Carpenter Racing: "It was a tough race, I'm glad I finished. We did quite well, but were just very unfortunate."
