Red Bull Racing managed to win a world title last season for the first time since 2013. In doing so, it defeated Mercedes, who consistently finished winning the world championship between 2014 and 2020. According to Christian Horner, that achievement has a clear reason.
Whereas Mercedes had become accustomed to having a decent grip in Formula 1 in recent years, it failed to do so with Red Bull last calendar year. With Max Verstappen, the Austrian racing stable had the favor factor and managed to stay in the fight for the world championship until the last race.

Horner explains competitive struggle

That Red Bull finally managed to close this winning streak did not surprise Horner at all. The team boss of the Austrian formation knows that his team has mainly followed its own path in recent years, which made it difficult for Mercedes to do anything against it.
"We are a bit more of a maverick than any other team," Horner explained in conversation with The Daily Mail. "Either through engine supply or drivers, Mercedes have done that with pretty much every other team over past years. There has been an element of influence. There isn't that influence with Red Bull and that makes us a very dangerous competitor."
