For Sergio Perez, the Canadian Grand Prix was the first race weekend since the announcement of his contract extension at Red Bull Racing. It should have been a festive weekend, but Perez did not fare well in Montreal. The Mexican was behind the times all weekend and retired after 53 laps into the race after badly damaging his rear wing.
After the Canadian Grand Prix, Horner stated in the media that Perez usually has more trouble adapting to trickier conditions. "I think he obviously struggles when the car isn't behaving well. He struggles more to adapt and it perhaps takes him longer, and not having the running on Friday, you end up on the back foot. I think that's something that we'll look at collectively with him to say, OK, let's come back strong in Barcelona."
Christian Horner, Red Bull Racing team principal, regularly spoke up for his employee in the media. But at the same time, the British team principal was also critical of Perez's performance.

Horner remains positive ahead of Barcelona

But despite Perez's struggles in Canada, Horner does believe Perez will recover during the next race weekend in Spain. "I think it was a combination of factors. So we had an issue in qualifying that contributed a little to it. Plenty for him and the team to look at to get him back into that window as we head back to Europe."
