Lewis Hamilton was looking to make up ground on the opening lap of the Belgian Grand Prix, and he did successfully until the end of the long straight. The seven-time World Champion collided with Fernando Alonso and nearly flipped his car. The British driver admitted to the mistake after the race.

"My fault"

Hamilton was told by his Mercedes crew to stop the car in the third sector of the track due to a problem. Hamilton, therefore, became the first retirement on a day when another podium place was possible. His teammate George Russell showed the Mercedes car had strong pace.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Hamilton acknowledged that he was at fault for the crash with his former teammate.
"Looking at the footage. He was in my blind spot and I didn't give him much room. It was my fault. He was in my blind spot. I will recuperate and come back," Hamilton said.

Straight after the crash happened, Alonso was frustrated and said some strong words on the radio. Alonso called Hamilton "an idiot" for the crash. Speaking to Band in Brazil, Hamilton responded: "I prefer not to comment about that. We had different results in our careers. This is the kind of thing you say in the heat of the moment."
