'Hamilton can seem vulnerable if you say something wrong'

Formula 1 drivers and top athletes in general need a lot of self-confidence to perform at the top of their abilities. According to Damon Hill, there is a way to encourage that during their upbringing by letting them discover the world for the most part on their own.

"This gives them a kind of self-confidence that allows them to cope with anything as they go out into the wide world. That is very important. I do not believe in unconditional approval, because then you get from those egotists. But you need that to survive in Formula 1," says the 1996 world champion on the In The Pink podcast.

"You have to have a lot of self-confidence," continues Hill, who has a number of examples. "Someone like Fernando Alonso does not have any glimmer of weakness. He's just unbelievable. And someone like Daniel Ricciardo feels very comfortable with himself. “
