Gerhard Berger lashing out to Ferrari: "The problem is very deep"

Former Ferrari driver Gerhard Berger is critical on the performance of his old team this season. The management structure at the Italian race stable can expect a lot of critism from their former driver.

"I said at the beginning when the structure was presented that it would never work. But I don't blame team boss Mattia Binotto at all, he's a good technician and was already on the team when I drove there" said the former rider in conversation with Sport und Talk aus dem Hangar-7.

"The problem is very deep. Ferrari needs reinforcements. I don't know if they can find a solution here in the short term", says the sixty year old Austrian. The two races in his homeland were disastrous for Ferrari. In the opening race Charles Leclerc disguised the malaise with a second place, while Sebastian Vettel dropped out. However, last Sunday during the GP of Steiermark, the two teammates collided (again) and after which both cars had to retire early.

"I drove six years for Ferrari myself and hoped to become world champion as well. Apart from Kimi Raikkonen, only Niki Lauda was in the lead for many years, alongside of course Michael Schumacher. He worked much more in the background and took half of the team with him. That's the only way to get this team behind you."

The ten-time Grand Prix winner points to other teams. "When we look at Red Bull, you have a Helmut Marko, Christian Horner and also Adrian Newey. Same goes for Mercedes. They had Niki Lauda and Toto Wolff."
