The FIA has expressed its solidarity with the family of Joaquim van Thuyne, the young karting driver who tragically lost his life in the Crans-Montana fire in Switzerland.
The young Swiss (18) was one of the 40 people who lost their lives in the fire that erupted during the night between 31 December 2025 and 1 January 2026, as New Year’s celebrations were taking place at the Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, a well-known ski resort in Switzerland’s Valais region.
“Joaquim’s professionalism, kindness and passion for sport left a lasting impression on all who knew him and competed alongside him. We join the global motorsport community in expressing our deep sorrow during this difficult time,” the FIA shared in his memory.
“During the early years of his career competing in Switzerland, Joaquim demonstrated a true love for motorsport and great promise, including a recent top-ten finish in the highly competitive X30 Challenge Switzerland. Racing with the Swiss Hutless team, and also a member of the FC Lutry junior football team — whom he was with on New Year’s Eve — we know how deeply this loss will be felt by so many.

“The FIA extends its heartfelt condolences to Joaquim’s family, friends and teammates, as well as to all the victims of this devastating tragedy.”

What happened in Crans-Montana?

According to initial indications, the fire may have started from sparks produced by sparklers attached to champagne bottles, which set the ceiling materials alight and caused the flames to spread rapidly, although investigators have yet to confirm the exact sequence of events.
The blaze engulfed the enclosed venue within minutes, with escape routes reportedly limited or difficult to use, trapping numerous people inside.
A criminal inquiry has been launched by authorities into the management of the venue, examining possible charges such as negligent homicide and violations of safety standards. However, the investigation is still ongoing, with the competent authorities yet to establish any definitive findings.
