Fred Vasseur had reason to smile after a strong Friday in Azerbaijan, with the two Ferraris finishing FP2 in first and second place.
Meanwhile, McLaren endured a difficult session with a “slippery” car. Norris ended his running earlier than planned after breaking his suspension against the wall, while Piastri also clipped the barriers, preventing him from showing his true pace.
The Australian was later summoned by the stewards as well. Here's the verdict.
The Frenchman spoke to Sky Sport F1 Italy after seeing Hamilton in P1 and Leclerc in P2: “I am satisfied, but dreaming is never a good thing, we have to focus on what we are doing. The margins are small because the McLarens didn’t finish their lap, but they are quick as well.
"Probably Mercedes didn’t fully use the engine: the group will be very close. The important thing was the race simulation, even if it was only 4–5 laps, but it went very well.”
“We need to focus on ourselves, try to get the best out of what we have, and then we’ll see tomorrow. It’s a good Friday, but we don’t know the fuel levels of the others; the worst-case scenario would be to think that everything is easy. We are always trying to chase the last thousandth to do our job.” he continued.
He also commented on using the C6 tyre this weekend: “In Canada, at Imola and in Monaco there was this doubt. It was never a clear choice. We carried out tests here in Baku, and I think the others did the same. In both cases, we have a couple of sets of mediums, and in Q3 we will only be able to use one.”
