Charles Leclerc set the fastest time of FP1 at the Mexico City Grand Prix, finishing more than six tenths ahead of Kimi Antonelli on a weekend where the Italian is expected to become the youngest champion in F1 history.
Leclerc finished 0.659 seconds ahead of Antonelli, who needs just two points to become champion on Sunday. Lewis Hamilton finished fourth in his Ferrari, but could not put a strong lap together and was seven tenths down on Leclerc.
Antonelli set the early pace in his Mercedes while a number of teams came out onto the track with aero rakes, including Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari. At the 30 minute mark, it was Hamilton who led by the way by just under a tenth to Charles Leclerc with Kimi Antonelli three tenths down.
Leclerc though made a big jump on the soft tyre to go one second faster than his rivals. Antonelli could only go six tenths behind on his first run on the softs, while Hamilton was seven tenths behind after a scruffy lap in which he made mistakes at Turns 4 and 13.
There were 10 rookies who took part in the session as the likes of Max Verstappen, Lando Norris and George Russell sat out the session. The quickest rookie of the session was the Mercedes of Frederik Vesti in P3, just one tenth slower than Antonelli. Iwasa was fifth in his Red Bull, ahead of Isack Hadjar who finished P11 and suffered power unit issues earlier in the session.

There was a big moment for Colton Herta who drove over 24 laps meaning he will earn the final point required for him to get his FIA Formula 1 superlicence. Herta is in consideration to replace Valtteri Bottas at Cadillac next season.
