Lando Norris is trailing in the wake of teammate Oscar Piastri as McLaren makes their resurgence and take the F1 world back by storm, but not everyone is convinced he has the mentality to go all the way. Former F1 supremo
Bernie Ecclestone has now weighed in on the 2025 championship fight – and his verdict will sting for Norris fans.
Speaking after to Blick, Ecclestone dismissed Norris as a true title favourite, instead throwing his weight behind teammate Oscar Piastri.
Norris far too mentally weak to challenge Piastri?
The 94-year-old revealed he’d backed the Australian after the current F1 campaigned had barely just begun.
“I’ve already bet on the Australian after three races!"
"He’s going his own way – and is mentally far superior to Norris,” Ecclestone declared.
While Norris has shown blistering speed, his mistakes have cost him dearly.
Qualifying errors in Bahrain and his crash at Saudi Arabia set him back early, while a crash into his teammate in Canada handed Piastri another big points swing.
Consistency, Ecclestone argued, is what separates the very best from the nearly men – and on that front, Piastri has quietly built a championship-winning run.
With just ten races to go, the pair remain locked in one of McLaren’s closest ever intra-team battles, with only 9 points separating the two drivers, with Piastri leading the charge.
Ecclestone, well-known for his provocative takes, recently turned his attention to Ferrari’s future.
With Lewis Hamilton yet to win a race in red and nearing 41, Ecclestone suggested the Scuderia should be bold when the time comes.
His choice? Brazilian rising star Gabriel Bortoleto as Hamilton’s eventual replacement.
