Former Formula One owner Bernie Ecclestone has hit out at the sport, saying Mercedes is too good compared to the rest of the field.
The numbers don't lie; Four straight titles in both the drivers' and constructors' championships. 73 out of the last possible 80 pole positions. 7, if you count the one time a Mercedes-powered Williams grabbed pole position. Mercedes has been the team to beat for some years now, and Ecclestone thinks this is very bad for the sport.
"Engine manufacturers must have some form of equality, they have to understand that this is necessary to make the sport more attractive," the 87-year-old told die Welt.
"I'm a big fan of Mercedes, but they win too much."
Ecclestone thinks out loud, theorizing that Mercedes could loan or sell some of their engines to a team like Red Bull, which would mean that after the teams develop the same engine for a few years, the competition would be way better.
"We would not have experienced total Mercedes dominance in that case," Ecclestone added.
