De Vries thinks halo saved his life: 'Everything went in slow motion'

The first Formula E race in Seoul ended for Nyck de Vries on the very first lap. The Dutchman was involved in a massive crash, which saw eight drivers end their race. Afterwards, he was happy that everyone was unharmed and praised the role that the halo played in that.

The incident took place on a drying track with little grip and poor visibility, De Vries explained in a Mercedes press release. "This is definitely not how I had imagined the race day today. Unfortunately, my race was already over on the first lap," says the 27-year-old driver from Sneek, who speaks of 'very tricky conditions'.

De Vries crashed his car into Sebastian Buemi's Nissan and believes the halo may have saved his life. "Fortunately the halo protected me in the accident," he continued. "Everything happened like in slow motion. I'm okay, but of course, that was the worst possible way to end my race. The most important thing is that everyone is okay."

Mercedes is now turning its attention to Sunday, where Stoffel Vandoorne has a good chance of clinching the world title at the second race of the weekend. During Saturday's race, Mitch Evans prevented the party from starting earlier.
