Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have both been fighting for the 2025 World Drivers' Championship title. During the Belgian Grand Prix weekend, Andrea Stella was asked about a number one driver for McLaren. McLaren have been adamant on not choosing a number one driver. So far this season, they have allowed both of their drivers to fight against each other and have not brought back the 'Papaya Rules'.
After being asked if it would be more confortable within the team to have a number one driver, Stella told GPBlog and others, "If I wanted to be comfortable, then I'm not doing the right job."
No number one driver for McLaren
He said, "I'm not really interested in being comfortable. I'm interested in putting McLaren in the best possible position to succeed, which means competing for the Constructors World Championship."
As it stands after 14 races, McLaren leads the Constructors with 599. Their closest competitior, Ferrari, has 260. The gap between the two is 299.
Stella continued, "If possible, making sure that the driver's world championship is a matter between the two drivers of the McLaren Formula One team."
McLaren also has a steady lead on the drivers' championship. Piastri still leads with 284. However, after winning the Hungarian Grand Prix, Norris is only nine points behind with 275. Once again, the gap to their other competition, Max Verstappen, is substantial. Verstappen is in third with 187.
Oscar Piastri at the Belgian Grand Prix
"In addition to that, even if this doesn't make my life or Zack's life any simpler, we are here also to go racing in a certain way, which is open, which may give our drivers the opportunity to express their talent, their aspiration, their quality, their constant development."
Stella added, "That's what we are here for. And we are very privileged to be in this position, and also, we are privileged that we are doing that not only with the team we have, but with Oscar and Lando, who are two great drivers, but above all, two great individuals."
