Leclerc slams 'disrespectful' rumours surrounding Vasseur's Ferrari future

Charles Leclerc has described the persistent speculation surrounding Fred Vasseur’s future as Ferrari team principal as “disrespectful”, insisting the Frenchman retains the complete backing of everyone within the Scuderia.
Vasseur’s position has been discussed following Christian Horner’s recent admission that Ferrari would be his “dream” destination should he return to Formula 1. The rumours prompted Ferrari to make an unusual public intervention, confirming it had “full confidence” in Vasseur and his team.
Leclerc believes that support had never been in doubt internally. "I’ve always said how much I trust Fred and how important he is for the team,” Leclerc told media including GPblog.
“We have a very special relationship, but over that, I think he’s extremely capable in what he does. I think he’s been extremely valuable so far, [and] he will be extremely valuable in the years to come as well.”
The Monegasque driver said Ferrari’s statement was aimed at making the team’s stance clear beyond Maranello, though he stressed it did not alter the feeling within the squad.

“I think there was never any doubt inside the team that he has all of our support,” he continued. “Then sometimes it’s needed to make it clear to the outside world as well. I just wish that sometimes there were less of these silly rumours going around.”

Leclerc: Rumours do not help Ferrari

Leclerc explained that talk over Vasseur’s future can become a distraction for a team trying to focus fully on performance.
“By definition, I think you don’t spend time speaking about the right things,” he said. “At the factory, we need absolutely everything to be pushing in the same direction. If you have these kinds of rumours, you spend maybe a bit more time speaking about these kinds of things, which is not nice.”
While accepting that criticism is part of competing for Ferrari, Leclerc believes repeated speculation crosses a line.

“Fred first, and all of us inside the team, we are pushing ourselves to the limits and I find it a little bit disrespectful to see so many rumours,” he said. “It’s part of our job to take criticism, but when you spread these kinds of things over and over, I think at one point, it’s just not so respectful.”
