Former F1 driver and Sky pundit Martin Brundle has suggested the grid is a "little bit scared" of how the 2026 cars will perform in wet weather conditions, with rain expected to be a factor at this weekend's Canadian GP.
Last time out at Miami, thunderstorms had threatened the race weekend, but after Sunday's Grand Prix was moved back three hours, rain did not affect the main event, meaning the 2026 F1 grid are still yet to experience racing in wet conditions in their new machinery.
The only wet-weather action for these new cars, introducing a 50:50 split in electrical power and internal combustion with heavy emphasis on battery management, has come in limited running at the Barcelona pre-season shakedown and testing during F1's April break.
Amid safety concerns prior to the Miami GP, the FIA banned the use of boost mode in wet conditions to go alongside with their earlier introduction of a 'partial' active aero mode, where only the front wing opens in specific circuit zones as opposed to both front and rear wings.

Brundle claims 'drivers are scared' ahead of Montreal rain

With chances of rain up to 60% for Sunday's race, former McLaren driver Brundle has raised concerns in spite of the safety measures introduced in the wet. Not only could the drivers face rain for the first time in competitive action in the 2026 cars, they would be doing so in Montreal, where mistakes prove more costly than at most tracks on the F1 calendar.
Brundle said: "The drivers are all a little bit scared of just what these cars are going to be like in the rain. They have got so much power and less downforce, less grip, and they don't know yet.
"Nobody really had that opportunity to push them in a competitive situation, so we could see, could see some drama. Only one in the last eight Grands Prix in Montreal have gone without the Safety Car of some kind because if you crash, you remain on the race track, effectively. It's a pretty challenging layout in that respect, old school, and we love it."

Drivers themselves have indeed spoken on the prospect of wet weather racing in the 2026 machinery, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri seeming unsure about having the cars' power "a computer's hands" prior to the Miami GP.
When asked at Miami about 2026 racing in wet conditions, Piastri said: "It’s going to be tough, but I think in terms of driving the car, it’s going to be not that different to what I've had before. It's just going to be what happens with the power unit? How do you get power?Where you get power is in a computer's hands, so it's just making sure that that does roughly what we expect, because obviously the margin for error when it's wet is significantly lower."

Norris raises Le Mans possibility as McLaren prepare for WEC Hypercar class

Elsewhere, Piastri's McLaren teammate Lando Norris has raised the idea of competing at Le Mans for the Woking team ahead of their 2027 WEC entry into the hypercar class. Earlier this month, McLaren unveiled the MCL-HY, the British team’s challenger for the 2027 WEC season.

So far, former Peugeot driver Mikkel Jensen and Laurens Vanthoor have been confirmed as McLaren's WEC drivers in 2027, and while next year surely ought to be too soon for F1 world champion Norris, the 26-year-old is not ruling out an appearance at the iconic Le Mans race at some point during his career.
Speaking on McLaren’s YouTube channel, Norris said: "You know, I still feel like I want to go and try other things. Do Le Mans, now McLaren are doing Le Mans, so maybe go and do that at some point. But I don't know. I'm still young, so I've not thought of everything just yet. But, you know, in the future hopefully I have kids and they get into racing or something and then I can live the story again.”
