Brawn understands criticism of sprint racing: 'We have a lot of traditions in F1'

This weekend Formula 1 will test a new format. Qualifying on Sunday, a race on Saturday and the Grand Prix on Sunday. The idea has been on the shelf for several years and is now being implemented. According to Ross Brawn Formula 1 expects criticism on the new format, but he also explains that a change is not immediately bad.

"I think there are advantages and disadvantages to it," Brawn explained in conversation with RACER. The sporting director of Formula 1 understands well that the rules in Formula 1 are quite fixed and that changing them cannot be done in big steps.

"I think being conservative in changes is very important because we have a lot of traditions in Formula One. We have a great sport that works very well. Things don't go wrong, so we have to be careful not to break things."

Brawn does feel confident that sprint racing can be a good addition to a race weekend. "I think it's good that we only have three races this year with this format. It gives us enough opportunities to test the concept and it doesn't ruin the championship if it doesn't work," Brawn concluded.
