The young Italian endured a rookie Formula 1 season of highs and lows, struggling in comparison with his team-mate during the first half of the year before coming into his own towards the end, showing flashes of the exceptional talent he had displayed in the junior categories.

Over the summer, the Verstappen–Mercedes saga also erupted, only to be shut down by the Dutchman himself as he confirmed he would remain at Red Bull for the following season, allowing both Antonelli and Russell to breathe a sigh of relief.

“During that difficult period, there were a lot of rumours. I was already going through a complicated time, and having external pressure on top of that certainly didn’t help,” Antonelli told motorsport.it.

“I knew I had a long-term contract, but certain rumours make you overthink things. It’s mentally tough, and it’s something you carry with you even when you get in the car. But growing up means learning how to live with these aspects, and after a year I can say I’ve gained that experience.

He finally added: “I know more obstacles lie ahead, but compared to a year ago, I now have a much clearer picture of what awaits me.”

Antonelli has brought Italy back to Formula 1 after four years, following Antonio Giovinazzi’s departure from Alfa Romeo Sauber in 2021 to embark on a new chapter in the WEC with Ferrari.

Ferrari itself was among the topics discussed with Antonelli, with the Italian naturally being linked to what could one day become an all-Italian pairing.

However, the young Bologna-born driver admitted he is currently happy at Mercedes, while acknowledging that the future is never set in stone.
