Experienced driver Fernando Alonso believes that mid-field drivers often opt to crash rather than lift off on the first lap. This comes after the Spaniard picked up a puncture on the opening lap of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
The incident ruined the McLaren drivers race after limping back to the pit-lane on just 2 wheels. The car lacked handling and proved tricky to drive into his pit-box.
“The first lap when you are starting in the middle of the group the people don’t lift off,” said Alonso who will compete in WEC this weekend.
“When you are in a situation that you will crash, they prefer to crash with you than lift off.
“They were three cars closing, closing, closing and no one lift off, and I was on the inside and I took two flat tires out.”
It wasn’t just the McLaren driver who was involved in an incident. Kimi Raikkonen and Esteban Ocon had a coming together which resulted in Ocon retiring from the race.
