Fernando Alonso revealed he jokingly found a way to enjoy himself during the race despite running at the back amid an Aston Martin struggling heavily in Miami.
The Spaniard finished the Miami race in 15th place, a lap down, but still managed to come home ahead of his team-mate and both Cadillacs after engaging in a lively scrap with Sergio Perez. Speaking to DAZN after the race, Alonso explained that, given the lack of competitiveness, the focus shifted to making the most of the situation.
“Yes, trying to keep ourselves entertained. Lance and I always talk about it every morning – whether we’ll be together or if not, wait for each other or whatever - to learn a bit about energy management and all that since we didn’t do many kilometers in winter. With Checo we tried to do the same, a bit of entertainment, and today we had a bit more pace than them.”
Shifting the focus to the race itself, with Aston Martin at least managing to get both cars to the finish, Alonso pointed to reliability as the main positive, noting it was the second race in a row without issues. However, he admitted the race pace was nothing special, explaining the team was simply trying to hold on and limit the damage with what they had available.

“We haven’t had any reliability issues, which is the positive note. It’s the second race in a row that we’ve finished without any problems. But the race pace wasn’t anything special. We were trying to hang on and not lose ground with what we could do.”

Alonso addresses timeline for decision on Formula 1 and racing future

On the eve of the Miami weekend, the two-time world champion also addressed the topic of retirement, an inevitable subject given his age and a career spanning more than two decades. Speaking to GPblog and other media, Alonso made it clear he has not yet seriously considered his future, despite holding regular discussions with Lawrence Stroll and the team.
He explained that their conversations are currently focused more on the present than the long term, even after meeting recently in Monaco, with no in-depth talks about what comes next. However, he acknowledged that a decision will have to be made later this year, likely around the summer period.

Alonso also pointed out that he still needs to reflect carefully and speak with his family and close circle before making any call for next season, stressing that he remains relaxed about the situation and confident that, should he continue in Formula 1, next year could be stronger as the project enters its second phase.
