During qualifying for the Austrian Grand Prix we saw something that hasn't happened very often in the last seven years. Not just one team, but two teams beating the world champions. And this could get worse before the race as Valtteri Bottas faces a penalty.

Before the qualifying session, the race director was very clear: no more slowing down in turn 9 and 10. Last week during qualifying, this caused real traffic jams of drivers looking for space for a fast lap. But also this time a few drivers got into trouble.

Angry Alonso

During the second part of the qualifying session, a train of drivers formed and Fernando Alonso had to pay the price. The FIA pointed to Valtteri Bottas and Carlos Sainz as the possible culprits and they are now facing a grid penalty.

It would be a small consolation for Alonso, who would move up one place on the grid. The biggest losers, however, are the AlphaTauri team. If Bottas is put back three places, both Pierre Gasly and Yuki Tsunoda can move up a place.

UPDATE: Sebastian Vettel has picked up a three-place grid penalty, but no further action will be taken on Bottas and Sainz.
