Mercedes team boss doesn't expect the freezing of engine development to happen in 2021, as he lets Motorsport.com know. Not because he disagrees, but because two other engine manufacturers, Ferrari and Renault, do not agree.

Red Bull Racing are still waiting for a decision around the possible freezing of developments to the F1 engine in 2021, in order to give the team more room to take over the production of Honda. Asked his opinion on the viability of this plan, Wolff states: “I think two of the power unit manufacturers not agreeing means it can’t come into force [and] can’t be implemented." “Renault and Ferrari have been very direct with their positions.”

Although Wolff doesn't trust the plan to freeze developments, he does have sympathy for the situation Red Bull currently finds itself in. “For Red Bull to take on that engine project, we just can't comprehend [the costs], obviously thinking about open development, particularly in the world that it currently is at."

Need for a solution

In the wider interest of the sport, Wolff finally concludes: “Obviously some form of solution needs to be found in the coming weeks.”
