At the beginning of the 2020 season, Pirelli announced that it would be testing new tyres for 2021 during several practice sessions in the season. These prototype tyres will have to be tested and the plan was that these tests will take place on different circuits during the second free practice sessions.

The original test days for the new tyres were Friday training for the second Grand Prix at Silverstone and for the Spanish Grand Prix. However, due to the broken tyres during the British Grand Prix that first test day was cancelled and later the test day in Barcelona was cancelled as well.

Less time pressure

Mario Isola, F1 boss of Pirelli, gives at Autosport that the extra amount of European races has given Pirelli more time to design the tire. "The cancellation of the original test dates has two reasons, firstly because we can discuss further steps with the new prototypes".

"Secondly, we have less time pressure because we have an extensive European calendar, so it is also possible to consider races after September for testing". After September, the F1 grid goes to many new circuits, but according to Isola that's not a problem. "I'm not worried about that because we have a standard tyre that we can use for that weekend," said Isola.
