When McLaren withdrew from the Australian Grand Prix on Thursday, one of the other teams to first vote not to race was Alfa Romeo Racing. The team's principal Fred Vasseur has now explained it wouldn't have been fair on the Woking-based team.

All teams came together on Thursday night in Melbourne, where they had to vote whether they wanted to continue the Australian Grand Prix or not following the withdrawal and the coronavirus concerns. For Alfa Romeo, the choice was quite an easy one.

"You have to think first of your employees, the safety of the fans, the image of the sport and the sponsors," Vasseur tells Motorsport-Total.com.

Besides, Vasseur has shown empathy for McLaren, saying it wouldn't be fair on them to keep racing.

"It would've been a bit unfair if McLaren would've been the only team not to have raced. Everybody in the team and at the factory has worked like crazy to be ready for Melbourne. Now, we're packing everything in and we'll see how it goes."

As far as the rest of the season goes, Vasseur still has no idea. Currently, the season is suspended until the end of May, but it's subject to change.

"We're having a meeting with Formula One Management. We'll talk about the calendar then."
