Haas F1’s Romain Grosjean believes it is still “too early to say” whether Pirelli’s 2020 or 2019 tyres should be used for the next season after testing in Abu Dhabi brought some “positives and negatives”.

The Frenchman compiled 146 laps of the Yas Marina Circuit as Pirelli aim to determine whether their proposed compound for Formula 1 next year should be used or not following negative feedback from previous tests.

Grosjean could not decide on a preference of either tyre with there being some positives and negatives to take from Tuesday’s testing.

“There are some positiveness and negatives. It’s early days. Is it a big change and what everyone would like to have? No,” said Grosjean as quoted by RaceFans.

“Again, we need to look at how we’ve been running the cars and to make sure we are on the maximum of everything.

“But if you ask me if I’m very happy about the new tyres and this is going to solve some of the problems – the thermal degradation, sensitivity to following another the car – I just have to tell the truth and no, it’s not going to change the problem fully.”

As to which tyre should be used Grosjean believes that there shouldn’t be a need for a decision to be made after a years development.

“I don’t know, it’s too early to say,” he said on which tyre should be used.

“But it shouldn’t be really a question, should it?

“So that’s where we are. If you ask me right now I don’t know. Depending on the track, I would tell you one or the other.

“This is not going to happen, [but] after one year of development you would like to be saying ‘I’m going to race 2020, no question’.”
