Red Bull team principal Christian Horner believes that Pierre Gasly's Canadian Grand Prix was effectively ended after the Frenchman was unable to pass Lance Stroll.

The Canadian driver put in a great performance at his home race which included keeping the faster Red Bull behind him for long enough that it ruined Gasly's race according to the Red Bull boss.

Speaking after the race, Horner explained that with Gasly getting stuck behind the Racing Point, it allowed Renault's Nico Hulkenberg to overcut him and cost Gasly a shot at sixth place in the end.

“With Pierre we tried to get the undercut on Daniel during the pit stop, we nearly made it, but he unfortunately got stuck behind Stroll which pretty much ended his race, allowing Hülkenberg to sneak ahead,” Horner explained.

“Fifth and eighth were not the results we were looking for but heads down and the focus is on Paul Ricard.”

Gasly himself admitted he was hoping for a stronger performance next time out at his home race in France.

"We need to analyse everything and see what we can improve but I also need to work hard before the next race. I hope we can find more pace and come back stronger for my home race.”
