Former Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg thinks Red Bull Racing were at fault for Max Verstappen's five-second penalty rather than the Dutchman himself, as Rosberg thinks the team should've warned Verstappen when he was released from the pit.

After a lightning-quick pitstop, Verstappen pulled out of the pit right next to Valtteri Bottas, and the pair drove side-by-side through the very narrow pitlane of the Circuit de Monaco.

Verstappen eventually forced Bottas to yield but the 21-year-old got a five-second penalty for an unsafe release, which eventually meant he was classified fourth after finishing second.

Rosberg thinks Red Bull are the party to blame for this, as they should have communicated better with Verstappen.

"Red Bull just made the mistake of releasing Verstappen right into Bottas," the 2016 world champion said on his own live stream after the Grand Prix.

"They should've told him: 'Bottas is there, leave space.' It was always a message I told my engineer at the time - when that's the case, remind me on my way out, 'watch to the right, watch to the right.'

"I'm sure Red Bull didn't do that and those are little details that in the end will make huge differences. And to win a world championship you need to nail all those details."
